John Howe, 73, of Athens, PA, passed away peacefully at Robert Packer Hospital on April 4 th ,
2024 after a period of declining health. John was born on January 12 th , 1951, to Frank and Rita
(Cogan) Howe in Newark, NJ.
John grew up in Chester, NJ prior to joining the Air Force in 1971,
where he served as a Senior Airman until 1974. After the military he worked for Verizon as a
lineman for 30 years, and later became a supervisor at Lucent Technologies. During this time,
he was also a volunteer firefighter and a member of his local chapter of the Kiwanis club. He
married the love of his life, Donna Cable, on October 2 nd 1993. While he and Donna started their
family he furthered his education and received a master’s degree in addiction counseling from
Fairleigh Dickinson University. He and his family relocated to Athens, PA in 2003 where he
worked for Schwann’s as a driver and later depot manager until his retirement. During his time
as a Schwann’s driver he was recognized as a member of the “Chairman’s Club” 3 years in a row
for outstanding performance. For many years he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of
Athens where he served as a trustee and faithful member. He enjoyed hobbies such as golf,
bowling, chess, watching NCAA basketball, and home improvement projects with his two sons.
Since retirement in 2018, he began collecting coins.
He is survived by his wife Donna Howe, daughters Pauline Bender and Rachel (Jimmy)
Morrisey, sons Patrick (Barb Hebbard) and Matthew (Janel) Howe. As well as siblings Terri
Kowalski, Tom (Pat) Howe, Evelyn Howe, Peter (Karen) Howe, Shauna Howe, and James
(Kathy) Howe. Grandchildren William Capell, Michelle Bender, Alexandria Bender, and James
Morrisey. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
He is predeceased by parents Frank and Rita Howe. Daughter Christine Capell. Siblings Frank
Howe, Katie Howe, and Dolores and Sandy Rems.
No memorial or funeral service is planned.
The family would appreciate any donations to be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in
